The province of Holguín guarantees medical care in rural and difficult-to-access communities, based on a comprehensive program in those localities, which prioritizes vulnerable populations.

In municipalities like Cacocum, where three of its five people´s councils classify in this nomenclature, actions are implemented to ensure the vitality of the sector despite the lack of resources caused by the strengthening of the economic, commercial and financial blockade of the United States against Cuba.

Dr. Lisbeth Leyva Pantoja, director of Health in that town, told the ACN that communities such as La Tania, Altagracia and La Güira del Pesquero, far from the municipal capital, are included in the program.

She added that in these neighborhoods they have an office with a doctor and a nurse who provide follow-up to its residents, evaluate vulnerable population groups and make the timely diagnosis of emergencies.

In addition, the modes of action are established for transfer to the Rubén Batista community polyclinic or one of the provincial hospitals, depending on the characteristics of each case, she pointed out.
Strict control is also maintained over pregnant and lactating women, as part of the Maternal and Child Care Program, which includes the transfer of a pediatrician, a clinician and an obstetrician to these communities, the specialist added.

In areas vulnerable to intense rains and meteorological phenomena, vaccination, health promotion actions and the training of new professionals, among other prioritized objectives, are carried out.

Holguín has more than 20 rural communities benefiting from activities that contribute to improving the quality of life and meeting the demands for cultural and professional improvement, especially among adolescents and young people.

Before the triumph of the Cuban Revolution there were only five thousand doctors in Cuba and there were no health programs in those intricate places, this being one of the first projects promoted by the Revolution that continues to this day, extended to the foundation of maternity homes and hospitals in the Turquino Plan.
