Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel has decreed Official Mourning throughout the country for the death of Commander of the Revolution Ramiro Valdés Menéndez.

According to a presidential decree, the measure will be in effect from 6:00 a.m. local time on June 23rd until midnight that same day.

During this period, the national flag will be flown at half-staff on public buildings and military institutions, as a sign of homage to the memory of the historic revolutionary leader.

The decree also establishes that the Ministries of the Revolutionary Armed Forces, the Interior and Foreign Affairs will be responsible for ensuring compliance with the adopted provisions.

Valdés Menéndez was one of the historic commanders of the Cuban Revolution and belonged to the generation that accompanied Fidel Castro in the fight against the Fulgencio Batista dictatorship.

He participated in the attack on the Moncada Barracks in 1953, was imprisoned afterward, and later joined the Granma yacht expedition and the guerrilla struggle in the Sierra Maestra mountains, contributing to the revolutionary victory of January 1959.

After the triumph of the Revolution, he held various high-level positions in the Cuban state, including Minister of the Interior and Vice President of the Councils of State and Ministers.

For more than six decades, he served in leadership roles in the country and was considered one of the most influential figures of the Revolution’s historic generation. (Source: RHC)
