The Fiesta de los Abrazos in Holguín, during the 32nd Romerías de Mayo (May Pilgrimages), is a fraternal space that brings together Cuban and foreign youth to demand an end to the U.S. economic blockade against Cuba and to promote peace and social justice.
Held in Calixto García Park, this event encourages cultural exchange and international solidarity with the participation of foreign and Cuban students from the University of Holguín (UHo) and the University of Medical Sciences.
Roxana Hernández Ricardo, secretary of Culture of the University Student Federation at the UHo, told ACN that this event is an act of humanism in which the youth support the common good and peace among nations.
For more than six decades the blockade has tried to suffocate the largest of the Antilles, and the country has not been alone in its claim, from the voices of supportive friends in the world. It also shows support for causes such as ending the conflict between Israel and Palestine, she said.
Flags of Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Venezuela and other sister nations were raised to represent the close ties maintained with the Caribbean island. Political, governmental and mass authorities, children and people of Holguín, as well as participants in the World Festival of Artistic Youth, joined the event.
The festival, also promoted by the Hermanos Saíz Association, aims to break down geographical and linguistic barriers to strengthen unity among peoples.
