Holguín: Vaccination with Pneumosil begins today

The province of Holguín is ready to apply, starting today, the 10-valent Pneusomil vaccine to more than 3,700 children under one year of age, with the purpose of preventing invasive pneumococcal disease, which can cause serious conditions, such as acute meningitis and pneumonia.
Dr. Norge Miguel Fernández Aguilera, responsible for the Immunization Program in Holguín, saicd that of the three doses of the vaccine, one of them will be administer as a booster, with an interval of two months between the first and the second dose, and the third one will be expected seven months since the last one was administered.
He reported that the first of the injections will be given to children born in July and will gradually be received by those who reach that age, such as those born between January 1 and June 30, who are between three to eight months.
When generally evaluating this vaccine that is included in the National Immunization Program of Cuba, he noted that it is “a dream come true to have Pneumosil, which protects them against 10 serogroups of pneumococci, which will have a great impact on the health of our children, because it will reduce the number of medical care for conditions such as pneumonia, otitis media and meningitis, it will also reduce the number of admissions for these causes, the serious forms of these diseases, as well as their fatality.”
He assured that it is a very noble vaccine, with little reactogenicity, although it can produce adverse reactions at the injection site, such as redness, induration, low-grade fever and fever of 38 degrees, mainly.
Contraindications include not administering to sick children with acute infectious processes or decompensation of chronic diseases, as well as hypersensitivity to any of its components.
