The province of Holguín is engaged in the international project Prosalud for teen pregnancy prevention and control, one of the priorities of UNICEF’s Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Launched in 2020 and already active in seven local municipalities, Prosalud is focused on care and promotional programs in family-doctor-and-nurse offices, even in rural and far-off areas where this issue has become frequent. In fact, Holguín ranks second on the list of provinces with the highest number of expecting mothers in the 11 to 16 age group.

The project involves interventions aimed at improving the sexual and reproductive health of this vulnerable population group, as well as the upgrading of professionals, the provision of contraceptives, and the conduction of surveys and case-specific studies, as the intention is to prevent pregnancy or else guarantee a safe childbirth.

Likewise, the province is Holguín is designing a joint strategy with the Ministry of Education to discourage risk behaviors such as hidden pregnancies with the support of a team of pediatricians, psychologists, obstetricians and other specialists.

Funded by UNICEF, Prosalud is integrated into the health care systems of several Latin American countries in order to have a positive impact on teenage and young adult development through talks, lectures and surveys. (Source: ACN)
