Specialists of the pediatric hospital Octavio de la Concepcion y de la Pedraja in the province of Holguín apply a novel surgical procedure for the treatment of traumatic cataract through pupilloplasty.

Dr. Yadelin Escalona Almarales, head of the ophthalmology service of the hospital, said that this technique consists of a small corneal incision to aspirate the crystalline lens and insert intraocular lenses, which has multiple advantages over traditional methods, as the cut is less than three millimeters long and therefore less traumatic and prone to cause swelling, a silver lining in pediatric patients, who would be less likely to develop astigmatism, for example.

“This technique needs no sutures, causes no pain, and leaves no scar”, she remarked. “We used to treat cataracts by making a corneoscleral tunnel incision to introduce a rigid lens implant, which needs a longer recovery and affects visual esthetics. Now, however, the use of new technologies and microsurgery techniques assures a safer and shorter recovery time and causes no obvious changes to a child’s eyeball”. (Source: ACN)
