The “Sigue a tu ritmo” campaign to promote HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis in Cuba was presented on Thursday in Holguín, as part of its promotion in several provinces in eastern Cuba.
This initiative has the support of organizations such as the Ministry of Public Health, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and several community networks, including the Network of Trans People and the Network of Men Who Have Sex with Men, with the backing of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria.
The activity is aimed at promoting the use of PrEP prophylaxis or pre-exposure, a high-impact method in HIV prevention, as an effective option.
PrEP consists of taking medications, which reduce the probability of acquiring HIV through sexual contact by more than 90 percent. It is an effective method that reduces the likelihood of acquiring HIV by more than 90% through sexual contact.
It was introduced in Cuba in 2019 and in Holguín in mid-2022, as part of the project supported by PAHO/WHO, UNDP and the Global Fund.
In Holguín, fifth territory with the most accumulated HIV cases in Cuba with a prevalence of 0.20%, the service is available free of charge in three polyclinics in the province: in the provincial capital, Banes, and Moa.
Dr. Osmanis Ricardo Puig, head of the provincial section of STIs, AIDS and hepatitis in Holguín, explained that the aim is to expand PrEP coverage considering the HIV incidence in this territory.
