The Holguín Territorial Oncology Center, attached to the Vladimir Ilich Lenin University Hospital, is strengthening programs to improve the quality of life for cancer patients in eastern Cuba.
Doctor Pedro Escalona Díaz, director of the institution, told ACN that it treats over 10,000 patients annually in radiotherapy and offers services in clinical oncology, nuclear medicine and brachytherapy.
Escalona pointed out that common cancer sites include lung, prostate, which is why prevention actions are carried out in the health areas with the main risk groups.
He added that in the territory there is specialized personnel for the early detection of the disease, through consultations distributed in secondary health care.
He explained that the center is also undergoing infrastructure improvements, with the renewal of the exterior paint and furniture, in addition to the maintenance of the equipment, which has been in operation for more than 20 years.
As the second province in Cuba with the highest number of cancer reports, the General Directorate of Health prioritizes human and material resources for the diagnosis and treatment of this disease, one of the main causes of death in the world.
The institution serves patients from nearby provinces while adhering to international standards taking into account the training of healthcare personnel. (Source: ACN)
