The livestock sector in the province of Holguín has among its main projects the expansion of areas for pasture and forage as an essential basis in the food protection of this branch, with a notable impact on the national economy.
The alternatives to achieve a greater availability of varieties of grass for animal consumption is focused on the projects of farms specialized in the promotion of varieties of protein plants that contribute progressively to improve the nutritional balance of the livestock, taking into account that most of the sustenance is concentrated in natural pastures.
Ramón Ortiz Vázquez, livestock subdelegate in the provincial department of agriculture, said to the ACN that in view of the demand for foods with higher protein content, the program aims to extend the sowing areas of the moringa, Moreira, tithonia and cratilia, recognized for the high nutritional value of their foliage for livestock.
Although these species do not replace the current volumes of the predominant natural pastures in Holguín's livestock units, they contribute to reinforcing the food base in the province's livestock companies, which this year have a milk production plan of 34 million liters, one of the highest volumes in recent times.
Ortiz added that the pastures planting program for 2020 amounts to about five thousand hectares, which today is slightly below the expected levels, but feasible to comply with from the daily monitoring of the program of each company.
Along with the promotion of the food base of livestock, constant monitoring is offered to the commitments to deliver cow's milk for the Dairy Industry as one of the priorities to help reduce the import levels of this important food purchased by Cuba in the international market, he concluded.
Holguín has more than 310 000 head of livestock.
