The University of Holguín promotes research aimed at favoring the adequate development of the Gibara Wind Farm, one of the main sources of renewable energy in the eastern province.

Roberto Sierra Pérez, director of Science, Technology and Innovation at the University told the ACN that the institution, together with the José Antonio Echeverría Higher Polytechnic Institute (CUJAE) of Havana, assumes the responsibility of investigating the field of wind energy in Cuba from the academic field.

He referred among the objectives under study the actions to help improve the cooling of the wind turbine nacelle and determine whether it is due to the type of material or the overload in this part of the device.

The researchers also focus on the analysis of the maintenance cycle of the wind farm areas, in order to know the period required for a general overhaul and the replacement of parts, which are damaged by the operating conditions, the impact from the sea, salinity, winds and humidity.

On the other hand, the Center of Studies for Computer Aided Design and Manufacturing (CAD / CAM) is dedicated to the production of parts that help to replace the usual breakages caused by weather conditions such as tropical storms.

The Gibara Wind Farm, located in a coastal area in the north of the Holguín province, began operations in 2008 and has six wind turbines, which can reach a nominal power of 850 kilowatts (KW), which benefits the economic and environmental sphere in the territory.
