A number of projects for the benefit of the inhabitants and natural spaces under Plan Turquino boast good results in five municipalities of the province of Holguín.
Geovani Zaldívar, head of the department of natural resources, prioritized ecosystems and climate change of the Ministry of Science, Technology and the Environment in the eastern region, told ACN that the main efforts are focused on economic and social development and based on the preservation and sustainable use of existing natural resources, including endemic species and hydrographic basins.
“One of the results is the preparation of a monograph of the eastern mountains, educational materials related to their ecological value and social events with the local population. Add to this the establishment of agro-ecological farms, the increase of production capacities, diversification of fruit plantations, studies about endangered flora, and the promotion of species adapted to the effects of climate change,” he pointed out.
This year Plan Turquino has kept working on elevation management projects promoted by the Center for Research and Environmental Services (CISAT) and organizations in charge of agriculture, flora and fauna, including the program Conectando Paisajes in the Cristal Peak and Alejandro de Humboldt National Parks and the Nipe-Sagua-Baracoa massif.
Holguín’s Plan Turquino benefits 107 population settlements scattered through an area of more than 2,000 km2 as part of the social protection programs implemented by the Cuban Revolution.
