The agricultural sector in the province of Holguín is carrying out new seed studies with the aim of facing climate change and promoting resilience to the variations caused by this phenomenon.
These lines are intended for planting in mountainous areas and selected productive polygons, where it is possible to evaluate their performance and adaptation to high temperatures and intense drought, among other parameters.
Robert Manuel Leyva Martínez, specialist of the Agricultural Extension, Research and Training Unit (Ueica) in the eastern territory, said that work is being done to develop new varieties of crops such as chili, eggplant and banana, taking into account soil conditions.
He added that new techniques are also being tested, focused on contributing to water savings by reducing the space between one plant and another, planting pumpkin and yam in mounds, and covering as much land as possible with short-cycle varieties.
These alternatives are applied in territories such as Banes, Urbano Noris and Gibara, which also benefit from the collaboration of the international projects Ecovalor and Gibara verde x ciento to contribute to local self-sufficiency and the incorporation of new technologies.
Ueica also dedicates its work to promoting the Sustainable Development Program until 2030, which includes lines of research such as plant genetic resources, production, conservation and management of seeds, phytotechnology comprehensive crop, animal feed and biotic and abiotic factors that influence agriculture.
With more than 30 years of work in the province, it has specialized departments that cover different agricultural areas in charge of a staff of competent professionals who also teach at university centers, which strengthens practical links with academia.
