The biofactory for plant reproduction through biotechnology in the province of Holguín contributes to food sovereignty programs by multiplying varieties for short-cycle crops.

In this facility, located in the industrial zone of the city, varieties of banana, yam, malanga and sweet potato are obtained, which are resilient to intense drought, soil degradation and other effects of climate change, among the projections of the agricultural sector.

Eugenio Almarales, a specialist at the institution, told ACN that after a thorough scientific process it is possible to reproduce up to three thousand specimens from a single mother plant, taking into account innovation and high quality standards.

These seedlings have among their main destinations the productive poles of the territory where through the implementation of international projects, equipment such as central pivot irrigation systems, tractors and technological packages are introduced to increase the properties of the land, he indicated.

He said that they are also marketed among farmers with outstanding results in the agricultural sector, whose fields provide the donor plants to restart the reproduction process, once the final product is obtained.

The Holguín biofactory was founded more than 40 years ago, with the purpose of using science and technological innovation in agriculture and increasing the productivity of crops with seedlings resulting from laboratory chambers.

In the eastern province, the third most densely populated in Cuba, a broad research program is being developed to produce natural fertilizers, optimize water use and replace imported inputs. (Source: ACN)
