The mechanized sugarcane cutting group belonging to the Manuel Isla Pérez technical school in Holguín province contributes to the generation of income for the sector through the productive link between the institution and the Cristino Naranjo Sugar Mill.

Located in the municipality of Cacocum, this educational project was the first of its kind to be established in the country during the 1989-1990 school year with the objective of familiarizing students of the specialty of technician in Agricultural Mechanization with the tasks in which they would perform once they graduated, explained to ACN Dixan Mojena, municipal director of Education.

This led to the strengthening of ties with the AZCUBA Company, which made it possible for the center to be one of the pioneers in the territory in the application of the Productive Teaching Strategy that establishes the responsibility of the entities in the comprehensive training of the qualified workforce and the economic contribution to the institution, he said.

So far this year this group has collected an amount of more than 250 thousand pesos with the cutting of more than two million 60 thousand arrobas of sugar cane, although it has a higher record in previous years, income that also benefits the polytechnic and the teachers and students linked to the work, he added.

Mojena commented that although important work is done in vocational training and professional guidance from the initial courses, the insertion of the students into the harvest takes place from the third year, during the pre-professional practices, which helps to complement the theoretical knowledge acquired, including those related to the handling of machinery.

The early approach of the students with their trade, not only allows them to adapt to the work routine, but also fosters in them values such as responsibility and love for the profession, which is vital for the economic development of the municipality, dedicated to the production of sugar and agriculture.

Since its founding more than 30 years ago, this teaching group has been made up of around three thousand students of Technical and Professional Education and have deserved awards such as the Millionaire Flag, presented by the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro. (Source: ACN)
