The restoration of land communication from the municipality of Imías with Baracoa and Maisí, interrupted by the destruction of the culvert constructed in the vicinity of the La Chivera community, is among the first goals achieved by the Holguín builders who support Guantanamo in the recovery of the damage caused by Hurricane Oscar.
The volume of the waters associated with the hydrometeorological event caused the collapse of this work and left the aforementioned territories without road links, which at the time represented a serious problem for the supply and assistance of those municipalities and the communities of Imías located further east, reports the newspaper Venceremos.
To restore vehicular traffic, men and heavy equipment from the sister province, from the ECOI-16 of the Holguín municipality of Mayarí, opened a temporary passage next to the culvert, which enables the circulation of all types of transport.
Miguel Hinojosa Abad, an investor for the Provincial Roads Center in Guantánamo, said that the work began one day after the hurricane hit and required the transfer of hundreds of tons of stone material from the La Farola viaduct, some 18 kilometers away.
He added that they have taken advantage of the rock from the landslides on that hill, which is an excellent filling material, especially for that temporary stretch, and he praised the dedication of the Holguín builders in the task carried out.
The temporary passage now allows the recovery of the destroyed culvert and creates the conditions for its possible expansion in the future, with the placement of a greater number of boxes, which guarantee the evacuation of any flood and prevent a new affectation, he commented.
