New actions of the international project Former (Strengthening Leadership and Participation of Women in the Renewable Energy Sector in Cuba) extend the use of these alternatives in the province of Holguín, one of the government's development priorities.
The project includes the placement of solar panels and water heaters in health, science and service institutions, with a positive impact on reducing the use of fossil fuels.
Geovanny Zaldívar Martínez, deputy delegate for the environment in the territory, told ACN that these devices optimize processes in hospitals and child care centers, which include rural and difficult-to-access locations in the municipalities of Moa, Báguanos and the provincial capital.
He added that this program also provides training for the better functioning of the equipment and the establishment of agreements aimed at the acquisition of spare parts.
Zaldívar Martínez indicated that the international project Former made a donation of teaching materials at the Luis de Feria Polytechnic with the purpose of installing a specialized classroom to prepare students in the assembly of panels, hydroelectric plants, as well as the design of biogas treatment plants.
Former, financed by Canada, also includes the installation of solar pumps for the water supply in farms and rural settlements in the Holguín territory with a considerable improvement in the accessibility to these services.
Since 2020, this international collaboration program has been inserted in Cuba in order to promote the change of the energy matrix by 24 percent, one of the development objectives of the Caribbean island until 2030.
