The conference «80 years of a text: Calixto García. Statesman", led by Dr. C Paul Sarmiento Blanco, presented in Holguín the new studies on the historical manipulation around the distinguished patriot, during the National Youth Seminar “Al General de las Tres Guerras.”

The researcher reviewed the performance of the military leader as a great statesman of the liberating feat,
the contradictions generated during the Necessary War, the unknown aspects about his dismissal and the distrust he showed towards the United States intervention in 1898.

Born in the city of Holguín on August 4, 1839, Calixto García Íñiguez was the insurgent leader of the three independence wars in Cuba in the 19th century, until he became one of the most relevant military strategists and political figures of that process. He reached the position of Lieutenant General of the Liberation Army.

He died on December 11, 1898 in Washington, while chairing a commission sent to have conversations with the government and the United States Congress about the situation on the island already occupied by the Yankee army.

Sarmiento Blanco invited the young people to reflect and interpret the History of Cuba, and warned that they were exposed to constant manipulation that needed to be confronted through study.

The conference, together with the research, photographs and the historian's book, will be shared digitally in the seminar's dissemination groups, where other works and presentations from the event are included.

The seminar, which began on December 8 in virtual mode, brings together more than 80 historians, researchers, workers and students from all over the country, with the presentation of essays, research, poems and digital designs accredited by the University of Holguín (UHo) and the Provincial Center for Cultural Heritage.
