The Basic Unit of Cooperative Production (UBPC) Modesto Fornaris, located in the Holguín municipality of Rafael Freyre, promotes the genetic improvement of four species of livestock in order to increase their productivity and adaptability to the territorial geography.
Carlos Pérez Berlanga, president of the entity, told ACN that this UBPC works on the development of livestock farming taking into account conditions of ownership, feeding and management of genetically superior animals that allow the development of breeding stock to raise the quality of the herds.
They are dedicated to the breeding of pure breeds such as the white Cuban zebu and the red one, in the case of cattle; in equines, the Quarter Horse; and the pelibuey and nubian typologies, of the ovine and caprine varieties, respectively, suitable for being adaptable to the conditions of the tropics, having higher rates of meat and milk and allowing crossbreeding, he pointed out.
Currently, they have more than 860 livestock, of which a total of 260 cattle, 11 horses, 46 sheep and 55 goats are certified as pure breeds, in addition to a group of animals yet to be appreciated whicht are registered in the Genealogical Book of the Republic, he added.
As part of their integration into the territorial self-sufficiency program, they included in their work the breeding of native pigs with 10 breeding sows, although the plan is to reach up to 28, which contributes to the food and nutritional security of the population, he commented.
Pérez Berlanga commented that with the objective of using science and technology to improve the efficiency standards of the sector, they will introduce artificial insemination with imported genetic material from cattle specimens, which in turn will contribute to achieving animal diversity.
The municipality of Rafael Freyre, in the province of Holguín, stood out at the territorial level for its agricultural work, with important results in compliance with the Food Sovereignty Law, food production and the increase in livestock, indicators to which the UBPC Modesto Fornaris contributed.
