With a critical view of the aspects that slowed the development of the sector in 2024, taking into account the complex socioeconomic context experienced in the country, Alberto López Díaz, head of the Ministry of the Food Industry (MINAL), began the exchange with representatives and directors of related entities in the province of Holguín.
The failure to comply with the planned plans, the decrease in industrial food production and the low use of installed capacities were some of the negative factors recorded until last December, as reported in the meeting which had the presence of Joel Queipo Ruiz, member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) and its first secretary in the territory, and Manuel Francisco Hernández Aguilera, governor of Holguín.
After a comprehensive analysis of the impact of the blockade imposed by the United States government on Cuba, participants referred on how this hostile policy greatly affected the delivery of the main products of the basic basket, whose guarantee costs the country a million dollars each year, as well as the development of other MINAL productions in different territories.
The work strategy defined by the ministry for 2025 is based on defining measurable projections, with clear indicators that allow establishing responsible deadlines for their fulfillment and, in this way, advance in the realization of each priority.
In this sense, it is planned to continue the implementation of the principle of subsidizing people who require it and not the products, establish competitive and collecting prices for marketing in MLC, promote multiple and flexible changes for legal access to foreign currency, among other actions.
In addition, the government is seeking to design a financial strategy to support exports, promote electronic commerce through Cuban platforms, strengthen monitoring to reduce crime, as well as other proposals that aim to encourage production and increase the contribution of the food industry to the Cuban economy.
