Cuban Minister of Transportation calls for the use of innovation

Eduardo Rodríguez Davila, minister of the sector, called for progress in the implementation of strategies based on technological innovation to improve urban and suburban railway services at a working meeting held in the eastern province of Holguín.
During the exchange held on Thursday with representatives of all sectors of this socioeconomic sphere, which includes air, sea and land mobility, the results of the 2023-2024 period were assessed, as well as the objectives for the current stage.
Rodríguez Davila learned that the territory has decreased the vitality of these services compared to the previous year, when it reached about 40 % of activity in the transport of passengers and prioritized that of cargo, both affected by the limitations with the fuel and the low technical availability.
In view of this, he pointed out the damage caused by this problem to the population of Holguín, of which about 200,000 people require daily means of transportation to get to work, study or home, for which it is necessary to make efforts to meet their demands to a greater extent.
In this sense, he highlighted the work carried out by the carriers and operators of the eastern province, who stand out nationally in the rescue and maintenance of locomotives, as well as in the arming and adaptation of other means for their operation on tracks.
Lazaro Llanes Lemes, deputy director of the Cuban Railroad Federation (UFC by its Spanish acronym) in the region, pointed out that, despite the difficulties suffered by the area in terms of lack of parts and oils for the repair of machines, last year the 22-28 engine car was put into operation and work is being done on the 41-46 which, with a route to Alto Cedro in Cueto, will connect four municipalities.
Wilmer Garcia Ramirez, director of the Transportation Company, stated that among the priorities for passenger transportation, one of the most affected by the complex economic context of the nation, are the increase in the control of leased vehicles which comply with their social purpose, the readjustment of routes and the rescue of links with private carriers.
In this regard, Rodriguez Davila commented on the important role played, in view of the low coefficient of technical availability, by non-state holders of operating licenses to strengthen the exercise in piqueras and shipments, the relevance of controlling abusive prices and the participation of the entities in the process of bankarization.
At the end of the meeting, the head of the sector also emphasized the continuation of the attention to the vulnerable through the medibus, as well as insisted on the signaling of roads and the performance of traffic studies to reduce the possibilities of accidents, where the average number of fatal consequences has risen.
