The Cuban Press Day in Holguín began with a symbolic journey to the Sao Corona cave, where in 1895 the newspaper "El Cubano Libre" was reissued by Antonio Maceo. This marked the start of the celebrations that will extend until March 15.
During the event, the importance of history as a defense tool and the press as a key element in shaping national identity was highlighted by historian Victor Aguilera Nonell, accompanied by Joel Queipo Ruiz, member of the Central Committee and First Secretary of the PCC in Holguín.
Germán Veloz Placencia, President of the UPEC in Holguín, urged journalists to be more effective in countering media disinformation campaigns aimed at weakening the resistance of Cuban revolutionaries.
These celebrations aim to honor the 133 years since the founding of the newspaper Patria, the 130th anniversary of the death in combat of José Martí, the 110th anniversary of the birth of Juan Manuel Márquez and the 40th anniversary of the the Pablo de la Torriente Publishing House, of the Union of Cuban Journalists. Additionally, it aims to recognize outstanding journalists in the exercise of their profession.
The day is part of a broader national context, where the Union of Cuban Journalists promotes a journalism more committed to truth and closer to the people's reality.
