The Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment in Holguín province is implementing a program aimed at preventing forest fires, which are among the main causes of the loss of biodiversity.

Geovanny Zaldívar Martínez, sub-delegate of this agency in the province, told ACN that some 14 kilometers of road maintenance were carried out last year, which have allow the extraction of wood, charcoal, firewood, round wood and yarey.

He pointed out that preventive actions are implemented in about 31 kilometers of risk areas, one of the guarantees to reduce these phenomena, mainly in mountainous areas where there are reserves of great value such as the Mensura-Piloto National Park.

Management plans for these areas include these measures and ecosystem services focused on the protection of the pinus cubensis, a common endemic species among those most affected by flames during the dry season, said Zaldívar Martínez.

Norkis Ochoa Aguilera, a specialist at the agency, said that environmental education activities are also being carried out in the communities near the forests and protected areas, such as talks, tours of natural sites and reforestation with endemic varieties.

There are also projects to control invasive exotic species such as the casuarina and the marabú, which have been found to be endemic to the area.

Holguín has also achieved results in the recovery of areas affected by mining and hydrographic basins, which contribute to the Tarea Vida, the Cuban state's plan to confront climate change.

In 2025, some 136 forest fires have been reported in Cuba, damaging more than 800 hectares, and Pinar del Río, the special municipality of Isla de la Juventud and Cienfuegos are among the provinces with the greatest damage, according to statistical information from the Forest Ranger Corps.
