Water resource specialists in Holguín are working to restore water supply systems damaged by flooding and winds following Hurricane Melissa, which struck eastern Cuba early Wednesday morning.

In the municipalities of Mayarí, Sagua de Tánamo, and Gibara, progress is being made in repairing infrastructure and assessing networks inaccessible due to flooding.

In Sagua de Tánamo, alternatives are applied to supply water to wells damaged by the storm and the rising waters of the river of the same, with the use of motor pumps. This municipality has 64 pumping stations with upgraded power sources, including generators and gravity-fed systems, serving approximately 70,000 residents.

Regarding the pumping stations that supply the provincial capital, it is estimated that the eastern and southern systems will be activated in the next few hours, while the northern system will take four or five days due to a breakdown at the Cacoyugüín station. The necessary resources are available for its repair.

In addition, a commission has been created for the daily monitoring of the province's reservoirs, which have reached 94 percent capacity following the recent heavy rains, officials indicated.

Simultaneously, the cleanup of bridgeheads over the rivers in the capital city is underway. These bridgeheads have been affected by fallen trees, debris carried by the currents, and solid waste dumped by residents—a lack of discipline that causes blockages and flooding in nearby homes.

Following Hurricane Melissa, the condition of more than 200 pumping stations in Holguín is being assessed, as well as the damage to infrastructure and canals, with the goal of restoring water service to the population as soon as electricity is restored. (Source: ACN)
