Holguín meteorological center continues to provide its services

The Holguín Provincial Meteorological Center maintains a wide range of scientific and technical services amid the complex economic situation facing the country.
Zulema Reyes Bermúdez, the institution's technical director, specified that the services provided are classified as either state-mandated or commercial, and are bolstered by research findings on topics such as the impact of climate change.
State-mandated services are directly linked to the center's core mission, as their purpose is to provide authoritative, reliable, and timely meteorological and climate information regarding the current state and future behavior of the atmosphere, the expert explained.
These include, she highlighted, surveillance and monitoring activities at stations and the Forecasting Group, as well as information bulletins and drought tracking.
Commercial services cover climatic characterizations of the province, municipalities, zones, or localities; studies on this subject at various spatial and temporal scales; and certifications regarding the impact of extreme weather events on different sectors of society, Reyes Bermúdez noted.
This aspect also encompasses agrometeorological and forest fire monitoring, as well as advisory services and postgraduate programs related to climate change—the latter being linked to the “Tarea Vida” (Life Task) initiative.
Examples of completed services include the characterization of the Cañada de Melones People's Council in Gibara, aimed at assessing the potential for growing Robusta coffee on the plains, and similar assessments for the localities of Tacajó (Báguano) and Cristino Naranjo (Cacocum) regarding sugarcane cultivation; these initiatives have been well-received within the framework of government programs.
The institution prioritizes research into atmospheric emissions, pollution, and the effects of climate change, such as saltwater intrusion, sea-level rise and severe drought, with findings that are essential for agricultural development.
