The Project ¡Actúa Diferente!, promoted by the World Food Programme (WFP), seeks to boost agricultural production in the municipality of Rafael Freyre, in Holguín, to improve nutritional support for vulnerable groups in social institutions.

According to statements by municipal head Dailyn Reynaldo Cruz, the initiative has raised expectations in this predominantly agricultural and tourist area. It directly benefits children, pregnant women, and older adults receiving care in schools, hospitals, and nursing homes.

The program’s second phase aims to strengthen production chains and social protection networks through actions adapted to the territory’s socioeconomic and climatic conditions. It includes the delivery of supplies, equipment, and training.

The project also provides financing, scientific support, and resources for local producers to encourage alternative methods of food production. In addition, it includes training workshops focused on resilience to natural disasters and climate change.

In the municipality, the 17 de Mayo Credit and Services Cooperative and the Carlos Noris Basic Cooperative Production Unit report that WFP support strengthens the regular supply of root crops and vegetables and helps increase production. The initiative also promotes diversification into poultry and aquaculture.

The second phase, financed by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), is also being implemented in Yateras, Guantánamo; Río Cauto, Granma; Songo-La Maya, Santiago de Cuba; and Jesús Menéndez, Las Tunas. (Source: ACN)
