Salto del Guayabo

Salto del Guayabo, the Main attraction of La Mensura National Park. It is located in the municipality of Mayarí, Holguín province. It is one of the highest in Cuba and considered of great ecological importance on the Caribbean island.


The climate is dry marked by the trade winds of the northeast. The access to the viewpoint of the place and the descent of the path takes approximately 1.50 hours, always on the eastern slope.

On the eastern slope there are varieties of ferns (33 species), among which stand out for their abundance the species Nephrolepis biserrata and Ciathea, orchids (36 species), Lianas, timber species such as Júcaro negro, el Roble, la Majagua and several shrubs and trees that reach between 15 and 20 meters high.

On the west side you can find the charrascal (characterized by small shrubs of microlithous leaves, orchids such as the phallus (terrestrial orchid), the coketta Prosthechea (Flor de negra), the Prosthechea fragans and the Vanila, among others.

In the place you can see various species such as the nightingale (Myadestes elisabeth), the tocororo (national bird: Priotelus tennurus), the royal thrush or "red-footed thrush" (Turdus plumbeus), the carta cuba (Todus multicolor) , Pitirre Guatíbere (Tyrannus caudifasciatus), the green woodpecker (Xiphidiopicus percussus), the long-tailed hawk (Accipiter gundlachi), tomeguín del pinar and other species of bijiritas and endemic birds of the area.
