The Cachorritos de Holguín made their debut in the Under-23 Tournament with a defeat in the sub-series against Santiago de Cuba.
In the first game, Holguín lost 9-0. Despite hitting 7 hits, they committed 3 defensive errors that Santiago capitalized on. The win went to Eider Yassiel Pérez, and the loss to Ramiro Rodríguez.
In the second game, Holguín bounced back with a 10-5 victory. In this game, Raúl Pupo stood out with a home run and a double, driving in 2 runs.
The team connected 12 hits and won with starter Yadir Bornot.
Holguín lost 11-9 after rallying from an early 9-0 deficit. Jolber Naranjo hit a home run and Arnolis Poll a double, but Poll was ejected for an inappropriate gesture. José Miguel González earned the win, and Orleydis Cuba took the loss.
This first sub-series showed strong offensive power but defensive weaknesses with five errors in three games and some pitching inconsistencies.
Holguín (1-2) needs to improve defense and better capitalize on offensive chances to advance in the tournament. Its next challenge will be against Guantánamo, who won two games against Granma in Group D.
