Gibara International Film Festival begins today

The XVII edition of the Gibara International Film Festival (FICGibara) begins today in this coastal city with the performance of the children's theater company La Colmenita in the community El Güirito.

The event, which will run until August 5, will celebrate the 20th anniversary of its founding by the late Cuban filmmaker Humberto Solás with an extensive program of activities that includes the screening of films competing for awards in the categories of fiction short film, feature film, documentary and animation.

At the opening gala, the Lucía de Honor award will be delivered to the actor Luis Alberto García and the Holguín costume designer, Violeta Cooper, while Jorge Perugorría will receive the award at the closing ceremony, for his important role in the relaunching of FICGibara between 2016 and 2022.

The Festival will pay tribute to Sara Gómez, Cuba's first female filmmaker, with the screening of restored copy of the film “De cierta manera ", the only feature film by the director, and a selection of her works, for their outstanding career in the film world.

The agenda also includes the special presentations "Silvio Rodríguez: Mi primera tarea ", directed by Catherine Murphy, a documentary that tells the story of the artist's maturity as a volunteer in the youth brigades of the Literacy Campaign, and " Fernanda y el extraño caso del mensaje a Figueroa”, under the direction of Mario Rivas.

The panels "Exhibition and Distribution: today's great challenges" and "A gender perspective for the audiovisual and the arts" will integrate the theoretical section of the Festival, as well as talks on heritage and meetings with the artists Néstor Jiménez, Bárbaro Marín and Ingrid Lobaina.

Audiovisual production workshops focused on adolescents and young people will be held at the local library, while El Almacén cultural center will host presentations by La Colmenita, the Tony's Screams project and the troubadours Leinier Verdecia and Ibet Rodríguez.


The celebration for the 50th anniversary of Nueva Trova will be in Plaza Da Silva, with the participation of Holguín singer-songwriters such as Manuel Leandro and Fernando Cabreja, in addition, jazz will be present with the interpretations of Figaro Jazz Club and Luis Barbería. (Source: ACN)
