The 2023 Adelaida del Mármol National Poetry Prize was awarded to the book El miedo de Virgilio (Virgilio's Fear), by Holguín writer Rolando Bellido Aguilera, as part of the activities for the XXIX Ibero-American Culture Festival.
The jury made up of writers Lourdes González, Yunier Riquenes and Eugenio Marrón, described the collection of poems as a work of core Cubanism, with clean language and effective use of prose that shows the influence of the best of universal poetry in the author.
Furthermore, it is a book with a solid unity and an argument that delves into family tradition with the use of original metaphors, which confirms the sagacity of the poet born in the municipality of Báguanos.
In previous editions and for 35 years, this jury has been honored by prominent writers such as Delfín Prats, 2023 National Literature Prize, Guillermo Rodríguez Rivera, David Chericián, Alberto Garrido, José Luis Moreno del Toro and Roberto Méndez.
Since its creation in 1988 in recognition of Cuban poetics, this award has been granted to the authors Luis Yuseff, José Luis Serrano, Lourdes González, Manuel García Verdecia, Roberto Manzano and José Poveda.
Convened by the Provincial Book Center and Ediciones Holguín, this award pays tribute to the most important poet of the 19th century in the territory and has managed to remain one of the most significant at the national level within the set of scholarships and awards of the Cuban Book Institute.
