From Infante theater to Cultural Complex

The old Wenceslao Infante cinema-theater in Holguín, inaugurated in 1939, stood out as the most modern in Cuba with an Art Deco design, representing the country at the New York International Fair that same year. The construction used an advanced steel structural system and state-of-the-art projection equipment, making it a pioneering project in terms of construction and materials.

In 1981, the theater was renamed Comandante Eddy Suñol, with the presentation of "The Legend of the Kiss", by the Rodrigo Prats Lyric Theater, directed by Raúl Camayd. With capacity for two thousand spectators, the theater underwent a major renovation in the late 2000s, ending in 2011 after several years of inactivity.

The headquarters, today known as the Eddy Suñol Cultural Complex, is considered the most relevant cultural institution in the province, described by artists as the cathedral of art in Holguín.

The theater: home of many

“The Eddy Suñol has been my home for 33 years. As in every home, there are challenges. It is very complex to carry out a staging today, to maintain an institution as important as this in its architecture and its visuality, but the theater has an excellent technical staff, who put their best efforts to guarantee the quality of the activities. It is well deserved that they call it the Cathedral of Art”.

For her part, Yariagnis Cordero González, director of the vocal group Feeling Voices the technical quality that distinguishes the staff that works here. “For 7 years we had the "Of love and music" club here and both in those moments and in the subsequent ones we have received their full support”.

Vianki González Miranda, director of the Poiesis project describes the theater as an institution that has been characterized, first by the quality of the technical elements and workers, and second by the artists of provincial, national and international stature who have chosen this place for their artistic presentations.

“The presentation here of my project Poiesis, made up of Dance students from the Raúl Gómez García school, is confirmation of the important role that the Eddy Suñol theater plays in the training of new artistic talents in the city”.

Today's Cultural Complex

Its director, Roger Rodríguez, states that although there are workers with more than 10 years of work, the majority of the staff is very young, and highlighted the work of sound engineers, lighting technicians, stagehands, room staff, box office staff and everyone who belongs there, because they always have plenty of love and commitment.

He points out that to make the artistic creations a reality on stage "the process of maintenance and conservation of the building has been important, the modernization of the sound and lighting techniques, which is constant, together with all the technological part that makes it have life."

Today the Cultural Complex enjoys a varied program, with periodic presentations. That is why it has received the Community Culture Award in the institution category, in its 25th edition, sponsored by the Manuel Dositeo Aguilera Culture House in the city of Holguín.
