The 34th edition of the Festival of Son Music Groups, dedicated to promote the traditional Cuban music, will take place from today until December 22 in the Holguín municipality of Mayarí.
Sponsored by the Provincial Directorate of Culture and the Music and Entertainment Marketing Company, the event will bring together the main groups of this genre, students and amateur artists from all over the country to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Nengón genre and the 45th anniversary of the founding of the Municipal House of Culture.
Jorge Tito Cabrejas Cordón, president of the organizing committee, explained that the event is the second oldest in the country, only preceded by the Jazz Festival, and chooses the Holguín municipality as its headquarters due to the extensive history of groups that turns Mayarí into the capital of this cultural event.
He also referred to the importance of the event as a promoter of artistic traditions and practices, and anticipated the participation of renowned Cuban orchestras in the northeastern region, where they enjoy great popularity.
Since its creation in 1989, the Son Festival has brought to the mountainous area of Mayarí several orchestras and artists representing the genre in the country, such as Los Van Van and Isaac Delgado, among others, to celebrate the best of the nation's music, traditions and cultural manifestations.
