In Holguín, care for critical maternal cases is being strengthened to reduce severe complications during pregnancy and childbirth, in line with the priorities of the Maternal and Child Care Program (PAMI).
At the Vladimir Ilich Lenin University General Hospital, the largest maternity hospital in Cuba, critical cases are reviewed with health authorities, in order to coordinate actions between secondary and primary care to ensure a better response.
According to Dr. Sara Liz Ricardo Suárez, deputy director of Critical Maternal Care at the health institution, the hospital handles between six thousand and seven thousand births annually and has a well-structured system to manage severe maternal cases.
In recent years, maternal morbidity has increased due to pre-existing diseases that are not properly controlled before pregnancy, which leads to serious complications.
To address this, a provincial multidisciplinary team with specialists from various fields has been created to care for critical maternal patients, led by the Provincial General Director of Health and the hospital director.
"There is a team of intensive care specialists, surgeons, clinicians, nephrologists, urologists, psychologists, neurologists, neurosurgeons, orthopedic surgeons, and ear, nose, and throat specialists. In other words, those in each specialty have been selected who, from a technical standpoint, have the best training to take on something like this. It's very complex, so when a red code is activated because a mother is at high risk, even if no complication has yet occurred, when that patient goes to the critical care room, there is a team from the critical care room to assist her," she explained.
Emphasis is placed on planning pregnancy, especially for women with chronic diseases, and the recommendation to conceive between 20 and 35 years of age to reduce risks, although successful cases exist outside this range.
The goal is to strengthen the Maternal and Child Care Program to improve maternal health and reduce infant mortality in the region and the country. (Source: Infomed)
