The role of the prevention and early detection of tumors in primary health care deserved fundamental analysis in the balance of the Territorial Oncological Center (COT) of Holguín, corresponding to 2019, with the purpose of reducing deaths by this cause and raising the quality of patients' lives.
Although gross and net mortality reported similar behavior with respect to 2018, it is a concern among the more than 215 specialists, technicians, nurses and support staff of this institution, attached to the provincial provincial hospital Vladimir Ilich Lenin and with coverage for several territories of the Cuban east.
However, there is an increase in new cancer cases in stages III and IV in lung (96 percent), prostate (82) and colon (50), while major surgeries exceeded 3 thousand 720, representing 32.92 percent of the total performed in the hospital.
Regarding the treatments, the number of people attended was positive, for example, 10,371 patients were treated in the Radiotherapy Service, of which more than 1,430 were new cases; while in Chemotherapy the number exceeded 14,200.
On the work of professionals and technicians of the COT, 56 thousand 888 patients attended outpatient clinics, 6 thousand 121 were assisted in the emergency room, while Nuclear Medicine provided therapy to 9 thousand 62 patients.
Regarding the investments planned for the stage, Dr. Nitza Sanz, director of the COT, informed that they finished the building works in the room where a tomograph (simulator TAC) will be installed.
By 2020, the main objectives are to start brachytherapy in the location of the head and neck, reorder the radiation protection activity, create a physico-medical work group and develop the projects integrated with the University of Holguín, aimed at continuing with the Comprehensive System of patient hospital information management, among others.
The COT had important achievements in the recently concluded year, among which the accreditation of Excellence of the specialty of Medical Oncology, the opening of radioguided surgery in breast and penile cancer and the selection of patients for brachytherapy application in carcinoma of rectum and the beginning of 3D gynecological brachytherapy treatments, which together with other therapies makes this institution a bulwark of medical care of the specialty in Cuba.
