The University of Holguín develops different research projects focused on the agricultural sustainability of the province, as part of its priorities in support of the demands of food security and nutritional education plan in the eastern territory.
Professors and students at the House of Higher Studies focus their work on around 21 researches related to the agricultural sector of national, territorial and business impact.
The Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences of the University carries out these studies along with various entities in the territory such as the Sugar Company and the Local Agricultural Innovation Program (PIA), with the aim to identify the problems to enhance food production through various crops and animal husbandry programs.
Reymundo Escobar Lorenzo, dean of the Faculty, explained that the feasibility of some research aimed at improving the cultivation of viands and the use of mushrooms in the non-sugar and food agribusiness sector is already being evaluated.
Among the selected species is the phytomat fungus, which constitutes a biostimulant obtained as a derivative of sugarcane, already used in urban gardens for the cultivation of tomatoes, cucumbers, beans, lettuce and sweet potatoes.
As part of the actions of this faculty, the Center for Arid Agroecosystems Studies (CEAAR) is in charge of the training of usufruct farmers through the socialization of a strategy developed by the academic group itself, with the aim of improving agricultural yields through the appropriate use of technologies in desert soil ecosystems in the province.
Since the beginning of 2020, as a result of the situation derived from the Covid-19 pandemic in Cuba and the tightening of the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States against Cuba, the University of Holguín strengthens the programs of scientific research in support of the development of projects that contribute to solve, to a certain extent, the existing problems in the different economic and social sectors of the province and the country.
