“COVID-19 has not gone away and the danger of the appearance of variants and subvariants is latent”, was the call made by Dr. María Eugenia Escobar, a Second Degree specialist in Hygiene and Epidemiology in the eastern province of Holguín.

The alert is based on information from the World Health Organization (WHO), which warns that "the new subvariant XBB.1.5 of omicron should be "watched", although it has not been shown to be more serious. But it's circulating."

And although the province maintained a stable behavior in the reporting of positive cases to SARS-CoV-2 until week 10, as of week 11 it began to experience a gradual increase in the number of confirmed cases.

Most of the positives are concentrated in pediatric ages, especially in children under two years of age.

In this regard, the doctor recalled that this group has not received any dose of the anti-COVID-19 vaccine, which is why it is one of those at high risk and requires the greatest care and protection from their parents, family and community.

Escobar acknowledged that "having our own vaccines has been a success in achieving control of the disease, but people should not forget that the antibodies that we obtain when receiving the immunogen and/or suffering from the disease are depleting, so it is necessary to receive booster doses”.

While she insisted that "Abdala" or "Soberana" reduce the risk of serious and fatal forms of the disease, but not the possibility of becoming infected.

That is why, it is essential to keep up preventive measures such as the use of the nasobuco (face mask) in places where there are conglomerates of people; avoid attending the work or study center; wash your hands constantly and keep the anti-COVID-19 vaccination schedule up to date.
