The recovery of more than seven kilometers of beaches through rehabilitation and maintenance actions stands out among the achievements of the province of Holguín in the implementation of Task Life, the Cuban State's plan to confront Climate Change.
Martha María Mousso, senior specialist in the sector, explained to the Cuban News Agency that these actions included 10 spas for tourist use in the territory, one of the priorities of the conservation programs.
It stands out Guardalavaca, one of the Sun and Beach destinations in the East, recovered by dumping sand after the damage caused by the impact of the intense rains.
Mousso added that monitoring work continues in these prioritized ecosystems, which cover the area of exposure to the Sun, the state of the dunes and the preservation of endemic flora and fauna populations and a source of consultation for territorial planning plans.
The application of agroecological techniques is also extended in more than 29 hectares, where around 69 varieties of root vegetables, grains, vegetables, pastures and forages with genotypic and agronomic characteristics resilient to the effects of Climate Change are grown.
In the eastern territory, the third most densely populated in Cuba, more than 446 hectares were benefited during 2023 with electric central pivot irrigation systems, which allow better use of water.
The Life Task has been implemented for five years in 76 coastal municipalities of the largest of the Antilles and its objectives are to reduce the negative impact of salinity, intense drought, coastal flooding and other phenomena associated with global warming, reducing vulnerabilities on beaches.
