The Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (Citma) in the province of Holguín continues the elimination of environmental liabilities, one of the strategies to contribute to the reduction of areas affected by open pit mining.
These regions, considered as “passives”, are areas close to mineral reserves, which must be gradually reincorporated into the environment through a specialized and comprehensive management project.
Geovanny Zaldívar Martínez, subdelegate of Citma, told ACN that in the eastern areas of the territory where mining operations are concentrated, more than a thousand hectares have already been recovered in recent years, which show signs of vitality and development of flora and fauna populations.
He added that the reforestation of these areas affected by mining and alternatives aimed at reducing soil desertification are the main actions to achieve this objective, where environmental education and community participation are introduced.
The Nickel Business Group also has an entity specialized in the recovery of areas by planting native varieties such as the pinus cubensis, mainly in the territory of Mayarí, Zaldívar Martínez stressed.
In the municipality of Moa, the Ecoarte educational program promotes the familiarization of adolescents and young people with the positive impact of the recovery of these spaces for varieties classified as critically endangered, concentrated in mountainous regions.
Holguín has other projects aimed at caring for nature, such as the reforestation of watersheds and the rehabilitation of coastal areas, included in the United Nations Millennium Development Goals until 2030. (Source: ACN)
