In order to maintain the stability of transport services to isolated areas of the eastern province of Holguín, the Basic Business Unit (UEB) Ferrocarriles Rafael Freyre applies science and technological innovation aimed at improving the state of the means, building new and repairing tracks.

Jose Luis Perez Rodriguez Rodriguez, director of the entity also known as Transferraz, explained to the Cuban News Agency that in a complex economic context, with the tightening of coercive measures imposed by the United States on Cuba, which causes shortages of resources such as fuel, lubricants, welding and bolts, they use innovation in favor of the welfare of the people.

With the social purpose of transporting passengers to five popular councils of the coastal municipality, from the machining workshop they assembled the three motor cars they have in operation, and they assume the maintenance by replacing parts of other equipment, among them the transmissions of locomotives in disuse and the reversible intermediate boxes to solve speed problems.

Alberto Pupo Lorenzo, head of the workshop and Railway Transportation Specialist, pointed out that one of the most complex tasks undertaken is the adaptation of the wheels of these vehicles, which used to be buses, and which must be rectified for use on 30-inch lines, some of the narrowest in the country.

He also added that through the work of a specialized brigade they keep intact the approximately 55 kilometers of tracks that run through Rafael Freyre and from there they manufacture most of the parts they use, among them, the water seal, screws and nuts used in the only steam engine they have.

Pupo Lorenzo also stated that these efforts demonstrate the quality and preparation of the workers who, in addition to the sustainability of the service, rigorously comply with the technical standards that guarantee the safety of the approximately 500 passengers they transport every day.
