Intensive Care Unit reopens at Holguín pediatric hospital

The Intensive Care Unit of the Octavio de la Concepción de la Pedraja provincial pediatric hospital of Holguín was reopened after after 11 months of undergoing major renovations costing approximately 80 million Cuban pesos.
The work included improvements to windows, walls, floors, installation of bathrooms in isolated cubicles, restoration of lockers and expansion of the medical room, although some finishing touches are still pending.
The ICU, inaugurated on September 17, 1982, at the initiative of Chief Fidel Castro, has treated more than 23,000 children from one month to 18 years of age over the years, explained Dr. Carlos Antonio Córdova Vega, head of the Unit.
Dr. Córdova noted that the main causes of admission include respiratory sepsis, specifically bacterial bronchopneumonia; patients with surgical conditions, diarrhea, respiratory failure, heart defects, and neurological diseases, such as epilepsy, nervous system infections and cerebral palsy, among others.
The current team consists of 10 specialists, 8 residents, 30 nurses, 4 laboratory technicians, and 2 general assistants, who provide specialized care to critical patients admitted there.
