Juan Mario Echavarría Hernández, the sector’s delegate, told CNA that there are more than 100 solar installations in the province. Distributed across 11 of the 14 municipalities, where new customers are being added to the water and sewage systems.
The official explained that the strategy covers localities traditionally affected by drought, where the feasibility of drilling wells is also being studied. It allows access to the service regardless of electricity generation.
He pointed out that the installation includes the creation of infrastructure conditions aimed at guaranteeing the operation of the equipment. As well as training for operators and managers in the sector. With the goal of achieving optimal use of this resource.
Among the municipalities benefiting from the use of solar energy for water supply are Gibara, Baguanos, Rafael Freyre, Cueto, and the provincial capital, Holguin.
The number of residents benefiting exceeds 57,000. This initiative is one of the strategies aimed at improving the quality of life for Holguin residents. A strategy that continues to expand despite current economic and technological challenges.
Moreover the energy transition in the Water Resources sector is also extending to the provinces of Pinar del Rio, Cienfuegos, and Las Tunas. Its objectives include savings in maintenance costs, stability in water pumping, a reduction in the use of fossil fuels. Also the replacement of more than 3,000 components, equivalent to 37 percent of the installed capacity.
Holguin has solar panels installed in institutions across sectors. Such as education, health, industry, and other vital areas, despite the intensification of the United States’ economic, commercial, and financial blockade against Cuba and the recent measures prohibiting access to fuel.
