The Nutrivida project, promoted by the World Food Programme (WFP), promotes the development of land with agricultural potential in Holguín to guarantee food security for vulnerable populations.

The project is being implemented in the municipalities of Mayarí, Moa, and the provincial capital, with the aim of improving the nutrition of pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, and children under 12 years old through collaboration with local production forces.

In Mayarí, work is underway to recover highly productive soils, currently depleted, while in Moa and Holguín, support is being provided to urban gardens and orchards located on fertile land away from the city center.

In the northeastern region, more than 41,000 people will benefit from the provision of fresh food to social safety nets. In addition, cooperatives involved will be equipped with technological resources such as irrigation systems and greenhouses with solar panels.

Héctor Cutiño Court, president of the Credit and Services Cooperative in the community of Guayabo, in the municipality of Mayarí, commented that the project will increase the yield of about 47 caballerías (approximately 1,500 acres) of land, ideal for various crops, vegetables, and tobacco, whose production will contribute to local development.

Nutrivida also includes workshops and educational activities aimed at training producers on optimal planting techniques adapted to local climatic conditions.

Cutiño added that the surplus harvest can be sold in local markets, generating additional income and completing a production cycle that will ensure the initiative's continuity and economic sustainability.

Nutrivida, which also has the support of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and funding from the Canadian government, is also being implemented in the municipalities of Bejucal, San José de las Lajas, and Santa Cruz, in Mayabeque province. (Source: ACN)
