Under the idea "peace is not only the silence of arms", as an established obligation for its components, the international Red Cross and Red Crescent movement commemorates the 71st anniversary of the Geneva Conventions in Holguín, on August 12.

“Today there are more than 60 conflicts, international and non-international, some that have been forgotten are no longer news, to this is added the increase in outbreaks and social claims, due to discrimination, racism, poverty, among others; those that are generally repressed with methods and means not accepted in human rights ”.

“Its main victims are the most vulnerable civilians, who immersed in the conflict, run the risk of losing their lives and their means of survival. The large number of refugees and displaced persons is one of its most pressing consequences and it is difficult to face from an economic-social point of view, ”said Mirtha Enrique Verdecia, head of social communication and International Humanitarian Law (IHL) of the Cuban Red Cross in the Holguín subsidiary.

The IHL expressed in these conventions, of which 193 states are parties, constitute the legal norms that establish limits on the use of means and methods to protect people in armed conflicts; they are currently considered the most universal treaties.

They also endorse the principle of disinterested and provided assistance without distinction to the victims, to the man who, wounded, prisoner or shipwrecked, without any defense, is no longer an enemy, but only a human being who suffers.
The Geneva Conventions were signed on August 12, 1949.
