Cuba will be present at the World Youth Chess Olympiad, to be held from August 16 to 23 in Barranquilla, Colombia, with two mixed teams, made up of players with strong performances in their categories.
The selected teams are U16 and earned their right to join the rosters based on their results last year, according to Cuban Federation President Carlos Rivero.
Fide Master (FM) Adrian Jesus Almaguer leads the highest-ranked Cuban team, which also includes FM Osiel Alberto Alonso, Felipe Herrera, and WMF Jinela de la Caridad Rodriguez.
The latter is the current Central American and Caribbean U20 champion, having dominated the tournament held last May in Varadero, earning her the direct WMI title and a Grandmaster norm.
The other Cuban team will be represented by Esley Bombino—the only man in the group—, girls midfielders Lorena Beatriz Montejo and Liennys Ferres, and Haden Zuaznabal, who has not yet been graduated by the international federation.
Jose Orlando Martin and Rodney Perez will be the captains of both teams, for a tournament that already has entries from 45 countries, 85 teams in total, and 351 players.
Colombian hosts will have around thirty rosters, as the most important thing at this age group is to give the players experience, and therefore there are no limits on the number of entries. (Source: ACN)
