The Ministry of Science, Technology, and Environment in the province of Holguín is leading scientific projects to promote a shift in the energy matrix, aiming to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and address the country’s current electricity crisis.

This initiative seeks to gradually transform the energy model toward the use of renewable sources.

The actions implemented include irrigation systems powered by solar pumps and the installation of solar heaters in hospitals and social institutions, said Geovanny Zaldívar Martínez, deputy delegate of the Environment in the territory.

These measures not only help save energy but also improve the quality of life in rural communities and key sectors.

The most remote areas, especially those included in the Turquino Plan, directly benefit from these projects. Thanks to international programs such as Ecovalor, local capacities in food production, environmental management, and energy sustainability are being strengthened.

In addition, technical training in photovoltaic systems and the importation of spare parts are being promoted to keep solar facilities operational, despite the limitations imposed by the U.S. blockade. Other renewable sources, such as wind and biogas, are also being explored, using animal waste to produce both energy and natural fertilizers.

Another noteworthy aspect is the inclusion of women in these projects, with benefits for female farm owners and residents of vulnerable areas, in line with Cuba’s gender equality policies.

Holguín is developing more than 200 scientific programs aligned with national priorities, focused on science-based sustainable development and food sovereignty. (Source: ACN)
