Holguín: Local authorities check investments in fishing industry

The highest authorities of the province of Holguín on Wednesday made a working visit to the municipality of Rafael Freyre to check the actions carried out as part of the investment program aimed at the recovery of aquaculture.
They toured areas of the Alevipez UEB, located in the Beola production pole, where investment actions are carried out to improve the infrastructure for the breeding of fingerlings.
Ernesto Santiesteban Velázquez, member of the Central Committee and first secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) in the province, referred to the need to promote alternative production, with the preparation of five hectares, in a first moment, which will be used for the production of food for fish.
The investment process includes repair works of ponds, the laboratory and the reproduction area, as well as the acquisition of equipment needed for the operation of the facility.
Sergio Castañón López, director of the Holguín Fishing Company (Holpes), explained that the province must strengthen the implementation of Resolution 52 of the Ministry of the Food Industry, through which fishermen have the possibility of marketing the result of their work at points of sale established by municipal governments.
Fr his part, Manuel Francisco Hernández Aguilera, governor of Holguín, insisted on the importance of taking advantage of the University-Business link, so that science is inserted to favor the development of these programs and obtain high indicators in all areas.
The visit included other areas such as the Fray Benito genetic center, belonging to the UBC Modesto Fornaris Ochoa, the only one of its kind in Cuba, which currently has about 574 cattle heads.
