Holguín strengthens food sovereignty in the face of climate change

The province of Holguín today launched training for the NutriVida project, an intersectoral initiative coordinated with the United Nations to consolidate food sovereignty in Cuba through local climate risk management.
Educators, local producers, administrators of the Social Protection Network, and risk management specialists are aligning strategies to integrate local food production between the Health and Education sectors, with technical support from the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the World Food Programme (WFP).
The training provided to technicians from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment improves the use of vulnerability matrices. This scientific tool assesses the exposure, sensitivity, and adaptive capacity of municipal agricultural systems to extreme hydrometeorological events such as droughts, heavy rains, or pests.
In a context marked by the impact of climate change in the Global South, this training equips local authorities with better tools for early warning, evidence-based decision-making, and reducing production losses in Cuban agriculture.
The actions carried out in the Holguín region are part of government programs that integrate risk management into municipal development plans to guarantee sustainable access to and availability of food for the population. (Source: ACN)
