The province of Holguín hosts from November 19 to 24 the 9th ninth meeting of Concert Bands from the territory, with headquarters at the Calixto García Park and the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC) in the eastern Cuban city.
The concert band of Banes, directed by Roberto Lezcay, opened the event at the central park of the city of Holguín.
"The event gathers for the first time the fourteen concert bands of the province, as we are involved in rescuing the idea of the leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, to create a concert band in each municipality", said Humberto Pino, director of the provincial group and one of the organizers of the event.
The theoretical event of the meeting was held at the headquarters of the UNEAC with a debate on the emergence of the municipal bands of Holguín and Sagua de Tánamo, by musicologist Zenobio Hernández, and the National Project for the creation of the municipal concert band, by Humberto Pino.
The event is dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the Independence Wars, the 40 years of artistic life of the maestro Humberto Pino and the musician and pedagogue Francisco Sánchez.
The event also pays homage to Commander in Chief Fidel Castro Ruz on the second anniversary of his physical disappearance, on December 25th.
"Holguin was the second province to create a concert band in each municipality," Pino recalled.
"The first was Granma. There, Fidel saw the performance of the Provincial Band of Bayamo and the Staff of the Eastern Army, at the inauguration of the School of Plastic Arts of Manzanillo. He look into how many bands existed in the country and when he learned that there were only 44, he promoted the idea of creating one in each municipality, " he said.
The project was completed in Holguín on December 25, 2009, where there were only the bands of Banes, Sagua de Tánamo and the provincial one, says Pino.
This was the apex of a long tradition of bands in this northeastern territory of Cuba dating from the nineteenth century. The Holguín musicians integrated the music bands during the Wars of Independence, among them, the one that accompanied Antonio Maceo in the Invasion from East to West and premiered the Invading Anthem under the direction of Manuel Dositeo Aguilera.
The closing ceremony of the meeting is scheduled for the 24th with a big concert at six in the afternoon in front of the Provincial Museum of History La Periquera.
