The General Directorate of Public Health in the province of Holguín implements measures to control and prevent dengue, a disease transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito.

Gianela Cruz, second-degree specialist in Hygiene and Epidemiology and director of the provincial center of the field, told to ACN that a strategy is applied in the territory aimed at reducing infestation rates by eliminating vector foci detected in the communit, and to protect the population.

In each municipality, temporary groups are in charge of the evaluation and timely diagnosis of non-specific febrile syndromes through active research, mainly in Cacocum, Calixto García, Sagua de Tánamo, Moa and the main city, she added.

Cruz commented that together with local entities such as Communales and Hydraulic Resources, in addition to mass organizations, action is being taken to eliminate environmental threats that exist in the neighborhoods, including micro landfills, leaks and stagnant waters.

Prevention actions also include the control of breedings of Aedes Aegypti mosquito at home and companies, talks with the population about the need of increasing risk perception and the importance of going to health institutions in case of any symptom, among others.

Once a confirmed or suspected case is detected, she explained, a group of criteria on medical care are analyzed, in which various factors are taken into account, including age, decompensated non-communicable conditions, pregnancy, puerperium, and then domiciliary hospitalization or admission is determined.

Adulticidal treatment is also applied in the high-risk blocks for dengue virus transmission, through the blocking technique in the surroundings of the house where the disease is confirmed, which includes fumigation or destructive focal, much more effective for the eradication of the mosquito.

Aedes aegypti is the main transmitting agent of yellow fever, four serotypes of dengue, chikunguya and Zika, among other conditions, and was discovered in 1881 by the eminent Cuban scientist Carlos Juan Finlay. (Source: ACN)
