With the recovery of the water treatment plant, the Vladimir Ilich Lenin University Hospital in Holguín, resumed its hemodialysis service, one of the services with the greatest impact on the quality of life of vulnerable populations.

Rafael Ramírez Montero, a water treatment specialist, told ACN that an own water source was recovered through the rehabilitation of the tanks and the waterproofing of the cistern associated with the system, as well as the corrections of the control loops and the change of the filter bed, among other recovery actions, which translates into higher quality water.

Previously, with the installed capacity, the plant was not capable of dealing with the turbidity levels that entered through the aqueduct network, therefore the pretreatment parameters were adjusted, the expert indicated.

After the repair of the equipment, it has greater autonomy by receiving water service from both the networks and its own source, which guarantees continuity in its operation.

For her part, Dr. Sara Liz Ricardo Suárez, deputy director of Lenin and head of the care service for serious patients at that health institution, indicated that for two months the patients had to travel to Las Tunas to receive their treatment.

She specified that the room has 12 artificial kidneys for the benefit of about 60 patients with advanced chronic kidney disease who require this medical procedure as a way to stay alive.

Dialysis is applied to people with kidney failure to replace the function of this organ and uses a water-based cleansing therapy and a machine capable of cleaning the blood, which is why the treatment plant is of vital importance.

Each one costs an average of 158 thousand pesos per patient and despite the effects of the economic, commercial and financial blockade of the United States against Cuba, on the Caribbean island this procedure is guaranteed free of charge for 100 percent of the people who require it. (Source: ACN)
